Step 2 is Enjoyment

Make Enjoyment Your Focus Object!

You don’t have to struggle when you focus on something pleasant.
Despite how mindfulness meditation may be taught these days in popular culture, it’s not a robotic procedure you perform on your brain. And, the point is not necessarily to “pay attention.” What does that mean, “pay attention?” Is attention a cold, clinical, lifeless, neutral force-ray?

The one meditation instruction you should stop doing right now, because it’s doing more harm than good, is:

“pay attention to your meditation object”

Instead, focus on how good it feels to be alive and breathing. Just feel how good the feeling of being alive can feel.

What is that feeling? Take an interest in it, then enjoy it.

Play with the breath and see what kind of breath feels the nicest.

Step one is take an interest, and step two is enjoy it.

What do you focus on? You don’t “focus on the breath.” You focus on the feeling of enjoyment of the breath.
