Step 1 is Interest

Use Variety Along the Path of the Breath to Generate Interest

you lead the investigation with curiosity

Interest has this investigating and curious energy to it. It’s like you ask, “what feelings and sensations are at this point?”And then the answer appears, in the form of the exact feelings and sensations that actually appear.

This is step one of the Snap Out of Thinking Method. It’s simply adopting an attitude of interest.

Here today, you’ll practice this attitude of interest on breath sensations, but you could also replace that with sensations in the body anywhere.  That will get this attitude of interest down for you. You will really know what it is to have an attitude of interest.

Then, any time you want in the midst of life, or formal meditation, just deliberately take an active interest by asking the question in your attention, what is this like? What do I notice?

You learn to tap that note!

Once you are familiar with that note, you always come back to it as step one to snap out of thinking.

Take this intention into the Breath Meditation or Sensation Meditation. You’re investigating but not analyzing. Just asking, and looking, feeling, and then seeing if you can feel it even more vividly.

I recommend the longer version because it has more time for silent looking, along with the pointing. Either way though, the important thing is guided learning and discovery, because the Snap Out of Thinking Method rests on your understanding and confirmation of what you notice to be true. The truth is on your side when it comes to becoming free of thought.

And of course, free of thought does not mean thought-free, it means free of being disturbed or compelled by your thoughts.
