Get Sharp About This One Particular Moment
A thought does not appear because of a mistake you made, but it stays when we accept its invitation
This is an energetic and active meditation training– with a single thing we are getting clear about.
In everyday life, and in many meditation sessions, we may not be able to exercise this “meditation muscle.” We need half a leg up on thinking to do it, so to speak. But we can do it almost any time for a little while, and sometimes we can do more– that’s what this short meditation is about.
When thoughts appear there are moments when we have a choice about whether to follow them or not.
Other times we may slip into the view that “I am thinking” and it’s my fault that I’m thinking so much.
But let’s just get clear, not just in our intellectual understanding, but immediate and close:
The fact that a thought has arisen has nothing to do with you. It is of absolutely no significance. It’s not an action you took that will have consequences later. You didn’t do it.
When a thought has arisen, it’s already too late. It’s happened. The universe’s math and logic played out and that is what resulted. It has happened.
Sometimes, it does feel like we can refuse to continue with the thought. The thinking mind throws up all kinds of thoughts, to see which one will stick. Sometimes it feels like we have a choice to continue on.
Let’s focus on that and get clear about that, rather than see the presence of thought as some kind of sign that tells us something about ourselves.
There is a kind of energy or inner mental attitude when we are not accepting invitations, when we refuse to run with it.
Let’s focus on that moment, when it happens!
(ps We can’t control when that moment happens either, but we can watch for it and recognize it.)
