What is Consciously Aware Like?

Alan Klima

In this contemplation you simply look into the sense when you know that you are consciously aware.

Like all the contemplations here, it’s not so much a meditation as an interactive learning experience, a pointing and a looking around. Just checking things out.

In a more formal and quiet meditation, you can always check this out again in the future, and you can always check it out during moments of every day life.

And just as is the case with all the contemplations here in this challenge, you should do about 5 minutes of untimed silent sitting before or after. (The time is just a guideline, read: no need to go for a long time, and stop when you feel like it).

This sense of being consciously aware is a different state than when attention is busy with thought.

Like rampant thinking, it’s temporary.

Yet somehow you know both rampant thinking and consciously aware: you can see these states come and go.

So use this contemplation to dwell in the mysterious way you somehow recognize the state of being consciously aware.

And even without trying, this passing from consciously aware to involved thinking, and back again, is also known, though you do not make either happen. How miraculous that this is seen! No words can represent this magic.

Simple Attention to the State of Being Consciously Aware

though you can’t say what exactly lets you know you are consciously aware, you do know!
